Privacy Policy
This is a working draft. It describes how The Den is built to work today and is waiting on review by our attorney before it takes effect. Items marked Counsel are still being settled. Until a final version is posted here, nothing in this draft is a binding commitment, and nothing has been sold yet.
The short version
- The Den has no cameras, no microphones, no ads and no AI. We never sell your family's data, and we never share it for advertising.
- Kids never get an account. A grown-up creates the family, and screens join it by local pairing. We ask for a child's first name or nickname only.
- Buying a Den Screen is also how a grown-up gives permission for the family information The Den collects. We rely on the payment itself, which is a method the children's privacy rule (COPPA) accepts.
- You can download everything or delete everything from the grown-ups app at any time. Deletion erases the live records at once, and backups are cleared within 30 days.
- The only location we keep is the city you type in for the weather.
1. Who we are
The Den is made by Digital Den Studios, LLC, a Georgia limited liability company ("Digital Den Studios," "we," "us"). You can reach us at:
- Email: hello@digitalden.studio
- Mail: Digital Den Studios, LLC, 2232 Tiger Flowers Dr NW, Atlanta, GA 30314
- Phone: (404) 457-3191
CounselConfirm the registered entity name, mailing address and phone number to print here. COPPA requires a physical address and a phone number.
2. What this policy covers
This policy covers the Den Screen wall display (the "Screen"), the grown-ups companion app on the web and in app stores (the "App"), and the pages at digitalden.studio/theden (the "Site"). Together we call these "The Den."
The Den is built for households. It is set up and controlled by an adult in the home, who we call a grown-up. Children use the Screen in the home but never hold an account of their own.
3. Information we collect
From grown-ups
- Account details. Your email address and a password (stored only as a hash), plus the name you choose to show in the family.
- Household settings. Your family's name, the city you type in for the weather, your time zone, the backdrop you pick, and your notification choices.
- Purchase and billing details. When you buy a Den Screen or renew Den Family, our payment processor Stripe collects your card details directly. We never see your full card number. We receive your name, email, shipping address, what you bought, the amount, and a Stripe customer reference so we can connect your purchase to your family and remind you before a renewal.
- Alert preferences. If you turn on alerts on your phone, your browser gives us a push-notification subscription (an address and keys that let us send a notification to that phone). You can turn this off at any time.
- Messages you send us. Anything you include in the early-access form or an email to us.
About children (entered by grown-ups)
- A first name or nickname and a color. That is all we ask for. We never ask for a child's last name, email, password, birthday, age, photo or school.
- Avatar. The look a child picks for their 3D avatar and any items they earn in the Dressing Room.
Created while the family uses The Den
- Feelings check-ins. Which of the 13 feelings a child tapped and when. There is no free-text box. Check-ins are private to that child's card on the Screen and visible to grown-ups in the App.
- Chores, routines, quests, points and rewards. What grown-ups set up, what children mark done, points earned and spent, and rewards claimed.
- Notes. Short notes a grown-up writes about a child in the App. Notes are one-way: children never see them.
- Calm Corner use. That a calming session was started and finished. We do not record anything else about it.
- Schedule items you add to the day-ahead view.
From the Screen and the App automatically
- Screen details. A pairing code while a Screen joins your family, then a device identifier, its software version, and when it last checked in so we can keep it in sync.
- Security logs. The IP address and time of sign-ins and pairing attempts, kept briefly to stop abuse.
- Crash and error diagnostics. Technical details when something goes wrong, so we can fix it. These do not include check-ins or notes.
The Den has no camera, no microphone and no GPS, so none of those kinds of data exist to collect. We do not use advertising identifiers or third-party analytics inside the Screen or the App.
4. Children's information and COPPA
The Den is used by children under 13, so we follow the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and its rule, 16 C.F.R. Part 312.
How we get permission
Before any child's information is created in The Den, a grown-up buys a Den Screen (or starts a Den Family subscription) and creates the family account. We treat that purchase as the grown-up's verifiable consent to the collection described in this policy, because it is a monetary transaction that gives notice to the account holder, one of the methods the COPPA rule accepts. During checkout and sign-up we show a direct notice that links to this policy. We send the direct notice to the grown-up's email as well.
CounselConfirm the payment-as-consent reading, including whether consent carries over when a household stops paying and moves to the Free Tier, which is free. Decide whether a separate consent step (such as a small charge or signed form) is needed at that point.
What we collect from children
Only what a grown-up enters (first name or nickname, color) and what the child creates on the Screen in the home (feelings taps, chores marked done, points, avatar choices, Calm Corner use). We collect no persistent identifiers from children for advertising or tracking, and we do not let children share information publicly or with anyone outside the household.
What children can see
On the Screen, a child sees their own card, chores, points and avatar. Siblings' feelings are hidden from one another. Notes written by grown-ups are never shown on the Screen.
Grown-up rights
At any time a grown-up can review the information held about their family, download it, remove one child, or delete the whole family (see Your choices and rights). Refusing or withdrawing consent means we can no longer provide the service, and we will delete the information.
We do not condition a child's use of The Den on giving more information than is reasonably necessary.
5. How we use information
- To run The Den: show the day ahead, chores, quests, points, rewards, routines, feelings check-ins, notes and the Calm Corner on your Screens and in your App.
- To keep your Screens in sync and paired only to your family.
- To alert the grown-ups you choose when a child checks in with a hard feeling. The alert never names the feeling on a locked phone or in an email; you open the App to see it.
- To take payment, send receipts, and remind you 14 days and 7 days before Den Family renews, plus a notice if a renewal fails or your plan lapses.
- To answer your emails and requests.
- To keep The Den secure and fix bugs.
- To meet legal duties, such as tax and billing records.
We do not use your family's information to build profiles, to train AI models, or for advertising of any kind.
6. Who we share it with
We share information only with the service providers that run The Den for us, and only so they can do that job:
| Provider | What they do | What they handle |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Database, sign-in and server functions | All family data described above, stored in the United States |
| Vercel | Hosts the Site and the App | Web traffic, including IP addresses, and the early-access form |
| Stripe | Payments and billing | Card details (we never see the full number), name, email, shipping address, purchases |
| Resend | Sends our emails | Your email address and the contents of receipts, reminders and alerts |
| Your browser's push service | Delivers phone alerts you turned on | An encrypted notification payload (Apple, Google or Mozilla, depending on your phone) |
| Weather services | The forecast on your Screen | Only the city name you typed, sent to the U.S. National Weather Service and a geocoding service to find it on the map |
CounselConfirm the final provider list, the Supabase hosting region, and that data processing agreements are signed with Supabase, Vercel, Stripe and Resend before launch.
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, to protect the safety of a child or anyone else, or to enforce our Terms. If Digital Den Studios is ever acquired or merged, your information would move with the business, and this policy would still apply to it until you are told otherwise.
CounselReview the legal-request and safety disclosure language.
7. What we never do
- We never sell personal information, and we never share it for advertising or marketing by anyone else.
- We never show ads, in The Den or anywhere else.
- We never put AI, cameras or microphones in The Den.
- We never let children browse the web, install apps, message anyone, or share anything outside the household.
- We never give third parties access to feelings check-ins or notes.
8. How long we keep it
- While your family is active, we keep your family's information so The Den works. Feelings history and notes stay available in the App for you to look back on.
- If you move to the Free Tier (your Den Family plan has lapsed), feelings check-ins and notes stop being shown. You can still download them for 90 days. After 90 days we delete them. Chores, quests, points, avatars and settings stay so the Screen keeps working.
- When you delete your family in the App, the live records are erased at once. Copies in our backups are cleared within 30 days. Any active subscription is canceled at the same time.
- If a family goes quiet (no grown-up sign-in and no Screen check-in) for 12 months, we email the grown-ups, and if nobody signs in within 30 days we delete the family.
- Security logs (IP addresses from sign-ins and pairing) are deleted after 90 days.
- Billing records, receipts and records of the direct notice we sent you are kept for 6 years, as tax and consumer law expects. These contain grown-up information only.
9. Your choices and rights
Everything below is available to any grown-up in the family from the App under Account. No request form, no waiting.
- Review. Open the App to see every piece of information in your family.
- Download. Download your complete household history as a file.
- Correct. Edit names, colors, settings and notes at any time.
- Remove one member. Deletes that child's or grown-up's information.
- Delete your family. Erases everything at once and cancels any subscription.
- Turn off alerts. On any phone, in the App or in your phone's notification settings.
- Unsubscribe. We only send the emails needed to run your account (receipts, renewal reminders, alerts you asked for). We do not send marketing email unless you ask for early-access updates, and every such email has an unsubscribe link.
You can also email us at hello@digitalden.studio and we will do it for you. For an emailed request we will confirm it came from the account email before acting.
CounselConfirm the identity check for emailed requests and the response deadline we commit to.
10. How we protect it
Data travels encrypted (TLS) between your Screens, the App and our servers, and sits encrypted at rest. Each family's data is walled off by row-level security rules, so a request from one family can never read another's. Screens join a family only through a short-lived pairing code shown on the Screen itself. Passwords are stored as hashes. Access to production systems is limited to the people who run The Den and is logged.
No system is perfectly secure. If a breach ever affects your family's information, we will tell you by email without undue delay and as the law requires.
11. This website
The Site at digitalden.studio/theden uses no analytics scripts, no advertising cookies and no tracking pixels. It sets no cookies of its own. Our host, Vercel, logs standard web requests (IP address, browser type, page requested) for a short period to run and secure the site.
If you fill in the early-access form, we receive your name, email, the screen you are thinking about, and your message, by email through Resend. We use it only to reply to you and, if you ask, to let you know when The Den is available. You can ask us to delete it at any time.
CounselConfirm whether the early-access form needs an explicit "email me updates" checkbox, and whether any cookie disclosure is needed once Stripe Checkout is turned on (Stripe sets its own cookies on its hosted page).
12. State privacy rights
Some states give residents additional rights, including the right to know, delete, correct, and opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. We do not sell or share personal information for targeted advertising, so there is nothing to opt out of. Every family already has the rights to know, correct, download and delete described above, and we never discriminate against anyone for using them.
CounselConfirm which state laws apply at our expected size (California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Texas and others have thresholds) and whether a "Do Not Sell or Share" link or a dedicated notice is still required.
13. Changes to this policy
If we change how we collect or use children's information in a way that matters, we will email every grown-up in each family and ask for fresh permission before the change applies to them. For smaller changes we will post the new version here with a new date. The date at the top always tells you when this policy last changed.
